Robert Turner, DMin, PCC, BCC

Rev. Dr. Turner is a visionary leader and change agent. Not only is he a gifted communicator, pastor, and board-certified coach but he is also a trusted advisor to elected officials and community leaders.

Early Life and Education

Rev. Turner began preaching at the age of sixteen and was called as senior pastor of St. John Baptist Church in Columbia, Maryland in 1993. Previously, he served as the senior pastor of Western Avenue Baptist Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Boston University, a Master of Divinity degree from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from New York Theological Seminary with a concentration in Church- based Community Development.

Coaching and Mentorship

He is a professional certified coach with the International Coach Federation, certified mentor coach, board certified executive leadership development coach, and certified relationship coach. Since 2013, he has led over one thousand coaching sessions, and helped hundreds of leaders, couples and individuals live with confidence and maximize their potential. As an executive coach, he helps top performers level up, unleash their potential and become everything they were created to be. In 2020, he mentored three young, high potential pastoral leaders through the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) Uptick Catalyst program.

Executive and Community Leadership

As a community leader, strategic problem solver, and innovator, he has over three decades of experience providing a valued, faith-based perspective as a board member, commissioner and founding member of several community organizations, non-profit organizations and corporations. Currently, he serves as a member of the BGAV Ascent Mission Council, Community Action Council (CAC) of Howard County board of directors, Columbia Downtown Housing Corporation board of directors, People Acting Together in Howard County (PATH) Strategy Team, Howard County General Hospital HHP Steering Committee and Health Advisory Council. In 2020, as a CAC board member, he raised over one hundred thousand dollars to assist individuals and families challenged by the pandemic and build a head start center in Long Reach Village.

As an innovator and champion for higher education and strategic partnerships, he has worked with administrators of Howard Community College to pilot a Wealth Building pilot program for third year Silas Craft Collegians students. He is also deepening the partnership relationship between his church and HCC by co-sponsoring a 5K community race to raise money for scholarships, the Bobbi Engram Sickle Cell Foundation, and the HCC Athletic Program. St. John Baptist Church is also paying the tuition for twenty- five students and providing speakers and mentors for the Student Support Services program to create a bridge program to attract students into joining Ambicionees, Silas Craft Collegians, and Howard PRIDE.

As a senior pastor, he has grown his congregation from several hundred to over two thousand and increased the church budget from two hundred and fifty thousand to over two million dollars. Their staff has grown from a part-time administrative assistant to eleven high performing full-time and several part-time employees.

During the pandemic, he led his congregation to adapt its in- person services and programs with the successful use of a virtual platform. St. John was one of the first congregations to work with Howard County General Hospital to serve as a free drive- thru vaccination site providing free health screenings, COVID-19 testing, COVID-19 vaccinations, and flu vaccinations. The church gave over fifty thousand dollars in scholarships in 2020 and provided a full-year tuition sponsorship for a Howard Community College student.

Through St. John’s partnership with the Community Action Council, the church has helped to house, feed and clothe tens of thousands of families in Howard County, as well as help educate young children through their Head Start Program. Rev. Turner has led the church to develop and execute anti-poverty initiatives, educational outreach efforts, and impactful children and community outreach efforts as well. Under Dr. Turner’s visionary leadership, St. John has donated hundreds of books and over one thousand shoes, holiday gifts and other resources to support local children and families in the community.

Personal

He has been happily married for over twenty- two years to Dr. Kimberly Moran Turner, an Ob-Gyn physician. Together, they are raising two high achieving college students who excel academically, athletically and artistically. As parents, they model a love for people and a commitment to excellence.

Rev. Turner also has a passion for distance running. He has successfully completed numerous marathons, including the Chicago Marathon, Disney Marathon, Disney 4 Day Dopey Challenge (5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon), Atlanta Marathon, New York Marathon, Dallas Marathon, and Baltimore Marathon. He has also served as a pacer for the Charles Street 10 Mile Race and the Maryland Half Marathon.
